NOT YOUR AVERAGE FITNESS STUDIO

Centrally located in Halifax on Quinpool Road, MOVE EAST is a space where friends, family and strangers gather to move their bodies. Our space is designed to offer a diverse range of group fitness class styles all under one roof. Our coaches & instructors are knowledgeable, dedicated and all-around fantastic humans.

Our space has two training rooms. Our strength and conditioning room, known as The Field, offers strength training, HIIT, circuit and bootcamp-style classes. Our infrared heated studio room, The Cabin, offers low impact class styles such as LIST, yoga and meditation. The Cabin also offers non-heated classes!

We are a full service fitness studio, with showers, towels and all the amenities you need to get ready for the day. We’re not just a ‘gym’ — we really do strive to make our members feel at home. That’s what makes the MOVE EAST community so special!

LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

MOVE EAST is a first-of-its-kind boutique movement studio, locally (female) founded and operated by Hannah Kovacs. At 28, Hannah moved east, back home to her roots in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a dream to open her own fitness studio. Having grown up down the street from MOVE EAST’s present day location (where her parents still live), Hannah felt a special connection to the community and was eager to give back.

Before moving home, Hannah spent nearly 7 years in Toronto, gaining experience in the tech industry before launching a career in fitness. Working in both tech and fitness helped her develop business acumen and diversified skillsets. Upon cultivating her own fitness community known as HIIT with Hannah and working alongside fellow studio owners for several years, Hannah felt ready to create something of her own.

Opening in 2019, just mere months before the pandemic hit, MOVE EAST was unprepared for the tidal wave of challenges hurling its way. Although only in its infancy, the power of community and teamwork ensured the business’ survival throughout 2 years of multiple closures and devastating restrictions.

Today the business thrives, offering a community and space for folks to move, sweat and connect. With over 10 different class styles, a small retail boutique, personal training and treatment room all under one roof, MOVE EAST is a proud employer of 20+ incredible team members.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

As non-Indigenous Canadians, we all bear the responsibility to honour the land we inhabit, and the Indigenous communities that have been here long before us. Putting in the work to learn and understand the ongoing challenges facing Indigenous communities goes far beyond a statement or donation. Those are beginner steps we can all take towards Truth and Reconciliation, but it must not stop there.

In making a Land Acknowledgement statement, we anticipate that the language and intent will change over time, based on the evolving needs and preferences of the Mi’kmaq People.

As we continue to learn, it is important to amplify the voices of Indigenous educators, leaders and communities. Be sure to appreciate and credit their knowledge, and centre their stories. We must be willing to be corrected and educated when we have erred.

We are grateful to work on this land and we must acknowledge that MOVE EAST resides in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We acknowledge and respect the Mi’kmaq People as past, present and future caretakers of this land.

ALWAYS A WORK IN PROGRESS

At MOVE EAST, we are deeply committed to creating a space that is inclusive, welcoming and safe for all. We celebrate all bodies, abilities and identities. Building community means holding space for folks of all backgrounds and walks of life. This is an integral part of our mission, with the mindset that we are always a work in progress.

With that said, we know our business, and the industry at large, has a long way to go. We are far from perfect. We have made mistakes. We have received and implemented feedback. We are actively learning and listening.

As we work to build a more inclusive space, we are always open to feedback and ideas from our community. Let us know how we can do better.
